2. FIELD REPORTS
WHAT FAMILIES SAY
I used to lie awake at night running through worst-case scenarios and not knowing what we'd actually do. After getting our fire plan from Safe Steps, that anxiety is just gone. It's laminated on the fridge, my kids know exactly where to go, and I know exactly what I'm doing. The peace of mind alone was worth every penny.
Rachel M.
Mother of 2 · Harrisonburg, VA · Fire Safety Plan
We moved from Georgia and I had no idea how to handle a real winter. The snowstorm prep guide walked me through everything — supplies, protocols, what to do if the power goes out for days. And having the generator professionally installed as part of the package meant I wasn't scrambling when the first storm hit. My family stayed warm and I didn't stress for a second.
Greg T.
Father of 3 · Staunton, VA · Winter Readiness Package
Handing your teenager the keys is terrifying. Safe Steps made it so much less scary. My kids both have step-by-step cards in their cars for what to do in an accident, how to change a tire, who to call, what to say to police. The products in the kit are things I know will actually keep them safe. I feel like I sent them out prepared instead of just hoping for the best.
Jennifer L.
Mother of 2 teen drivers · Waynesboro, VA · New Driver Package
I run alone early in the morning and I refused to stop — but I knew I needed to be smarter about it. The solo female runner package gave me everything: the right gear, a check-in protocol, and the confidence to actually use it. I'm not paranoid anymore, I'm prepared. There's a huge difference.
Alicia W.
Charlottesville, VA · Solo Runner Safety Package
3. MISSION

ONE MISSION.
I
PILLAR ONE // FAMILIES

PILLAR TWO // COMMUNITIES

Educate Communities

Shared training that strengthens neighborhoods and builds resilient communities prepared to respond together.

III
PILLAR THREE // VETERANS

Purposeful post-service careers — military expertise turned into meaningful community impact at home.

4. EXECUTION
HOW IT WORKS
PHASE I

Inquiry

You submit a family inquiry form on our product pages. We review your information and reach out to schedule an introductory call. During that conversation, we discuss our process, understand your specific needs, and answer any questions you may have. If it's a good fit for both of us, we move forward with a purchase agreement.

PHASE II

Assessment & Floor Plan

We send you an intake form that covers the information we need to build an effective plan. From there, you'll either scan your home using your phone or we can visit and do it for you. Either way, we build a floor plan based on your actual space so your plan reflects your home.

PHASE III

Plan Build

We take your intake information and floor plan and develop a comprehensive scenario response plan customized for your family. This includes designated rally points, decision trees for different situations, and specific role-based instructions for each family member.

PHASE IV

Briefing & Training

We conduct a thorough briefing where we walk your family through the entire plan. For those who want deeper preparation, we offer in-person training sessions in your home. We then provide ongoing access to our portal where you can run simulations, log rehearsal sessions, track progress, and maintain your family's readiness over time.

HOUSE FIRE
FACTS
Ten facts that highlight the serious risk of house fires.
01
HOUSE FIRE DEATHS ARE RISING
3,920
3,920 Americans died in home fires in 2024, the highest total in over a decade.
Civilian Fire Deaths, 2014–2024
Source: NFPA, "Fire Loss in the United States During 2024."
02
MODERN HOMES REACH FLASHOVER MUCH FASTER
3.5minutes
A home with furniture made from modern synthetic fabrics reaches flashover (the point at which a fire is completely unsurvivable) in about 3.5 minutes.
Time to Flashover: Legacy vs. Modern Furnishings
Source: UL Fire Safety Research Institute (UL FSRI), 2009–2020.
03
NIGHTTIME FIRES ARE FAR MORE DEADLY
41%
17% of home fires happen between 11pm and 7am, but that window accounts for 41% of all fire deaths.
Share of Fires vs. Share of Deaths: Night vs. Day
Source: NFPA Research, fire incidence and fatality by time of day.
04
MOST CHILD FIRE DEATHS HAPPEN DURING SLEEP
58%
58% of children under 10 who died in a home fire were asleep at the time, compared with 31% across all ages. Children are far less likely to self-evacuate.
Asleep at Time of Fatal Injury: Children Under 10 vs. All Ages
Source: USFA; National Fatality Review Case Reporting System.
05
A CLOSED DOOR SIGNIFICANTLY EXTENDS SURVIVAL TIME
When an adjacent room is on fire, a closed door can extend your room's survivable conditions from about 2 minutes to upwards of 12 minutes.
Time Room Remains Survivable: Fire in Adjacent Room
Source: UL FSRI door-control research.
06
SMOKE ALARMS ONLY WORK IF THEY ARE FUNCTIONING
~19%
Nearly 1 in 5 homes with a smoke alarm has at least one that doesn't actually work.
Smoke Alarm Presence vs. Fully Functional Status
Source: CPSC 2024 household smoke alarm survey.
07
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS DO NOT STOP HOUSE FIRES
5%
98% of people can operate a fire extinguisher, but only 74% use correct technique. Frighteningly, only 5% of home fires are actually put out by a fire extinguisher.
Extinguisher Use: Capability vs. Technique vs. Real-World Outcome
Source: WPI / Eastern Kentucky University study; CPSC 2009 residential fire survey.
08
OLDER ADULTS FACE A MUCH HIGHER FIRE DEATH RISK
3.6×
Adults 85 and older die in home fires at 3.6 times the rate of the general population, the highest of any age group.
Fire Death Risk by Age Group: Multiplier vs. General Population
Source: USFA, age-based fire death risk ratios.
09
ELECTRIC RANGES ARE RISKIER THAN GAS RANGES
3.4×
Homes with electric ranges have a cooking fire death rate 3.4 times higher than homes with gas ranges.
Electric vs. Gas Ranges: Risk Multiplier
Source: National Propane Gas Association, summary of NFPA study.
10
FIRE DEPARTMENTS OFTEN ARRIVE TOO LATE
9min
The national average fire department arrival time is about 9 minutes, well after a modern room can already flash over at 3.5 minutes.
Room Flashover vs. National Average Fire Department Arrival
Source: NFPA 1710; UL FSRI; Globe/Purvis analysis of department response compliance.
THE DATA IS THE ARGUMENT

NOW BUILD THE PLAN.

Every fact above is a reason a family needed a plan before the fire started, not after. SafeSteps builds that plan: role-based evacuation, rehearsed drills, and a documented response your whole household knows cold.
